English Language Arts- 6th grade

Reading Comprehension
In the Unit 2 exam, students will be given passages to read, and they will be asked questions about them. They will be asked about details that they comprehended as well as about the literary techniques and genres used.
The following are the following techniques that students need to understand:
·         Summarizing- is a strategy that helps readers review what they have learned while they are still reading a selection.
·         Main Idea and Details- Identifying main ideas and details in a text helps readers keep track of general and specific information while reading
·         Asking Questions- It is a way for readers to focus their attention on a selection by looking for answers to their questions.
·         Fact and Opinion- Determining what can and cannot be proven true in a selection helps readers understand the author’s opinion.
·         Adjusting Reading Speed- It is a strategy readers can use when they are reading a text that may be more challenging than they have read before.

The following are the literary genres that students should also be able to identify:
·         Expository Text: tells people something. It contains facts about real people, things, or events. They can be found in history books, encyclopedias, etc. (The Emperor’s Silent Army)
·         Narrative Nonfiction: blends elements of fiction with elements of nonfiction in order to tell a more compelling story. (Island of the Bulls/ told a myth then told the history)

Grammar
Students will be asked to recognize sentences that are written correctly. Students should study all of the rules in the handouts and workbook pages of each lesson listed below.
·         Apostrophes  (WB pp. 91-92)
·         Subject-Verb Agreement (WB pp. 105-106)
·         Adverbs (WB pp. 121-122)
·         Quotation Marks (WB pp. 135-136)
·         Dashes and Hyphens (WB pp. 149-150)
